Method
Prepare the Dough
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape the Bowls
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces.
- Shape each piece into a ball and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Boil a large pot of water and add baking soda. Carefully drop each dough ball into the water for 30 seconds, then remove and place back on the baking sheet.
- Brush each ball with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
Bake the Bowls
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter while warm.
- Let cool slightly before cutting the tops off to create bowls.
