  • 1 ½ cups sour cream
  • 2 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 small yellow onion (diced)
  • 2 teaspoons garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon dried mustard
  • ½ cup (122.5 g) whole milk (room temperature)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
  2. In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté diced onion until translucent.
  3. In a large bowl, mix thawed hash browns, sour cream, shredded cheese, sautéed onions, garlic, flour, seasonings, chicken broth, and milk until well combined.
  4. Pour the mixture into the baking dish and bake for about 50 minutes until bubbly and golden brown.
  5. For the topping, fry thinly sliced onions in vegetable oil until crispy; drain on paper towels and season with salt.
